Title: A question regarding taqsims
Post by: Loona on March 25, 2015, 08:23:22 AM
Do you think taqsims can also be performed alone or as introductory pieces to vocal performances? I know they're just a few notes, but just out of curiosity.. can they? Be performed as a melody?

Of course they can!
A taqsim is, by definition, a musical improvisation, so you can play it whenever you see fit. It's different from the maquam though, just so you know.

Thanks, BearHug for explaining what a taqsim is.

I actually didn't know hat it was, so I looked it up myself and found this video:

Would you guys say this is a musical improvisation though?

Hehe! I think proms nailed the answer here!
A taqsim is indeed usually played before an actual song, but it can very much be a song in itself!
