Making an electric oud
« on: November 15, 2015, 09:11:40 AM »
A music loving friend came to me and asked me to make him an electric oud.  We came across a video on YouTube that he liked the design so I have started to compile some information.  Some of the different woods used are beech, Honduras mahogany, African walnut, maple, and ash.  I have some thick slabs of black walnut from a local tree that I might use.  I see where the tuning pegs go and where the fingering is done is a layer of what looks like ebony wood with an idea for an inlay design (no frets installed on finger board).  I was wondering about the dimensions.  Total length will be about 31".  I think the string length needs to be 22.4" (57 centimeters).  If anyone can help with design do's and don'ts or ideas that would be most helpful.
