Here comes a video with best explanation of a slap I've ever seen:

Great video!!  I assume this technique carries over to the vertical darbuka well?

Thanks, when I've seen this clip 1st I was familiar with Congas for about 7 years,  Djembé - 5,  Bongos  - 4 and Darbouka - 2.
My Conga teacher invited me to play a Djembé part over Conga accompaniment,  but categorically disliked my slaps. At that place I couldn't reproduce those sounds and techniques he showed to me... For that I started seeking a good online tutorial and "Bingo!"
 :)
To do it with an vertical handling? - Yes, of course. But look out, whole trick isn't in the drum at all, it's a thing with your body! - You  may adopt movement to any playing position!!!

So after this clip I:
  • had had my first authentic slap on Djembe (after years)
  • increased my abilities in slaps on Congas and Bongos by 1000%
  • and learned a lot on modulating sounds (not only slaps) on any drum.
8)
Those skills are a must be for resonant playing, and I rather see my posting a starting point for further arguments and interchange of fresh know how.

I have to admit I tried the technique shown in the video and found myself failing - for now.  Very hard to get my hand relaxed enough to get my fingers to slap my palm.  But, I know relaxation is the key here and I will persevere!
