There isn't really any answer to this. It depends on a lot of things, like how often you practice, how dedicated you are, how quickly you learn, how good your teacher/information sources are, etc. The more time and effort you put into learning, the faster you will learn :)

I started as a drummer(Drum set) moved into percussion in HS (92-94) and then picked up a doumbek and a djembe for the first time at 20. I'm 38 now, and while the previous skills helped me (particularly with fills, and improvisation) I bought a CD to learn the traditional Rhythms, went to a couple of clinics, but still 18 years later I consider myself a student of the doumbek. Its something I hope to never "master" because I want to continue that excited growth/learning/joy everytime something new clicks for me :-)
The heartbeat is the first rhythm we hear,
The love of a mother in her womb,
The drum is the beat of life.

If you aim is only to learn this then it might not take long time, but if your focus in on many things then you will definitely find it harder, so all is dependent on the way you work things and some people are quick learners while others are slow.

The basic thing I learned took me 3-4 months and the points with basic things were to keep focus and getting the our body right for playing and all these basis, I took me 3-4 months to get good in and after that the real learning start with learning Darbuka and all those instruments, so in total it took 14-16 months to complete understand thing, but one thing is sure that learning never stops.
