Title: How to play triplets and rolls louder?
Post by: Loona on April 08, 2015, 07:14:44 AM
When playing in a setting with other instruments, what do you do to make your darbuka sound louder? Please don't say hit it harder! I'm looking for some advanced techniques, if there are any, thank you!

Have you tried left-right single stroke rolls? They're significantly louder than the finger rolls so it should work.
And another thing, you need to be relaxed when playing, don't tense your muscles! Doing it will make things even worse..

Either do what BearHug said or try tuning your darbuka. A higher tuning should help, however, if you feel you are not heard while you're playing, you're probably wrong, the thing is that your sound still counts to the layers of the music, even if you can't distinctively hear it.

Concentration on playing louder will take away the art so stop trying to play for louder sound. If in any case you want to go that away then I think tuning is definitely the best way to go, but will again say you should not put your concentration on their.

The secret of loud rolls using split finger technique is that your fingers must become absolutely relaxed. This comes with a lot of practicing and there is no other way  :)   The reason for low sound of rolls and triplets is tension in fingers. They finally must work like hammers in piano.

I need an information. What's the best way to play triplets and rolls loudly in a setting with other instruments?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

There are two ways for you. If you're asking about technique, then I think for most people left-right single stroke rolls will always be louder than finger rolls, Turkish style not with standing.

But if you are asking how to get louder, the answer is practice and also relax your muscles, many people tend to tense up when playing hard but that's the worst thing you can do, I think.
