« on: August 20, 2015, 05:49:34 AM »
Hi, beginners,
do you like Darbouka lessons by Aviel!? (look Topic: Wow! Every Wednesday New Darbuka Lesson!)- New #7 is a bit tricky, isn't it?!
So let's do a breakdown with this example:

Professional breakdown of a rhythmical pattern

1. Independence:
This is an advanced skill to improve coordination of your hands while playing.

What's the matter:
While left hand is playing the 4/4-pulse
K---K---K---K---|
you are filling rhythm with your right hand
D---s-tt--s--dd-|

Same thing in #3 with Malfouf and with Maqsoum in #4. If you are common with Malfouf, there is no problem to add the pulse by the other hand, am I right? - But now main pattern is much more tricky. You may fail with it even when it ”rolls”… (more information below) Another case in advance - if your left hand pattern becomes rhythmical too…

To avoid complications you may start playing left and right hand patterns first apart only - then switch left/right after 4, 2, 1 times like this
K---K---K---K---|K---K---K---K---|D---s-tt--s--dd-|D---s-tt--s--dd-|… i.e. with 2 times

D---s-tt--s--dd-|K---K---K---K---|D---s-tt--s--dd-|K---K---K---K---|…

Then switch only the right
K---K---K---K---|K---K---K---K---|K---K---K---K---|… while
________________|D---s-tt--s--dd-|________________|

After some training you should get the feeling of your whole phrase. Good luck!

2. Timing:
This skill gives you an independence in various tempi (speeds).

In our pattern we can find three different tempi:
D---S---K---K---| = 4/4
--------K-S-K---| = 2/8
------ttK---Kdd-| = 2/16

You may have some troubles with 2/16 because it's played very unusual here with left-left(-right) and left-right(-right) while there's 2/8 in the background what's played simple hand-to-hand as left-right(-left)  (more information below)
That plays against a common feeling: Usual for beginners is to double speed with second hand. Intermediately - with one hand it's like in first part of Maqsoum and then you may play 2/16 with both hands (i.e. look #1).

In result it makes sense to break down the fast part of the pattern for training especially:
K---K-ttK-s-Kdd-| or this way
D---s-ttK-s-Kdd-|

… and also we should break down the slow part
D---S---K-S-K---|
and then build our pattern step by step
K---K-T-K-S-K-D-|  etc.**)
to feel the difference and take a better stability of the phrase at the end.

3. Handling:
This skill is how to organize your hand moves for a better playing.

Some ideas only:
• play the ”ttK” with right Turkish split fingers
• play ”Kdd” similar to that with a (very) little turn in the wrist of right hand (to loosen it)
• try out playing the slaps with different forces: from ”grab the skin” only up to ”fully bounce it” - feel the difference apart of the doum sounds.
• try out playing slaps in different places: in the middle of the drum; with long/short fingers; below/above of the middle; slap near of edge; straightening or turning your wrist.

Which sounds are the best?!
Which handling is good for increasing speed?

… and please - leave your comments!

If you have no idea how those patterns should sound rhythmical ...

... use http://www.khafif.com/rhy/rhygen.html

Copy and past notation of the pattern (from the beginning till end-sign "|") into the "Rhythm:"-Field - with "PLAY!"-Button you'll get a MIDI for your player.
i.e. try:
D---S---K-S-K---|K---K-T-K-S-K-D-|D---s-ttK-s-Kdd-|

You'll get a sound sample of a pyramidical exercise for your timing.
Enjoy!

P.S. Doesn't work?!
Look this: Sample
