So, a skin for the darbuka is something you choose? I thought they came with their own skin, I didn't know you can change it! Is it difficult or risky to keep changing the skins on a darbuka? (I mean, can you ruin the instrument or damage it?)
Roses are red
Violets are blue
... no, wait, violets are purple!

Hey Lillyan :)
Yes, the skin of the darbuka is a factor too, when you decide which one to buy. Or when you need to replace the skin on the darbuka you already own.
The skins are natural or made of plastic. Of course, the natural ones are better, as they make the sound so much better, but many actually prefer the plastic skins, because of the higher tone.
Doumbeks rock!

I think both are ok to use. It all depends on how you would like your instrument to sound like. Spinny explained it pretty well though :)

Honestly speaking even I was not aware that we can decide the skin, as I always thought it to be given and we have to go with that, but this is so cool that we can even decide this, so now we can choice according to what we find more attractive!

I always prefer to have natural ones, as Spinny said it right they are much better, as their sound is a lot cooler, I donít really like plastic skins, as I feel very uncomfortable with that, so thatís why for me natural is definitely the best!

Frankly speaking I have no clue really, as I never ask my provider about skin and I got what he showed me, so there was never any talk about skin. I donít think it even makes a difference to sound, so thatís why I donít give it too much attention.

To be completely honest I feel that skin is not connected to sound, so whatever we select it is not going make any difference to the sound, I just look for one which is cool and attractive, but at end of the day I am fairly happy with whatever is on offer.
