How difficult is it to play the ney?

... or the kawala. Or the flute, for that matter!
I'm just curious, is it difficult to play these instruments? Would you need to have like, really healthy lungs in order to do it? :D

It's not that difficult, I've tried it. Granted, I only tried it once and it didn't go all that well... but I did and the point it you should too. Learning how to play an instrument, whatever it is, is more of a subjective matter.

There's actually a certain technique needed to play this instrument, the position in which you hold it is important and of course you would need to learn the proper technique to move your fingers around.

Starting is always difficult, but if you are passionate then you will slowly but surely feel good, itís not too difficult once you start learning. When I started I thought it is too difficult, but as I played it for few days and after that I really enjoyed it, so itís just the starting phase which is difficult.

From my very little expierience (just few years of swimming around flutes and brass instruments),

starting a new instrument, especialy brass one, is a bit new and diffrent to the common mind.
its really the opposite of obvious. I've been whistling into the ney for 2 weeks now, and its amazing.
I remember when I got it, there was nothing I could do with it.
but after few hours of trying, playing with it, in baby steps, things actually change.
it really  does remind me  baby's first steps.
after weeks or month of trying, no balance at all, nothing stable, then something comes out, and its a really beauty, it really is amazing
especially if you have the patient for it.

everyday that passes, every morning I wake up, every night of sleeping, I wake up into the next day with a feeling of more connectedness to the ney. I keep its fire, and its a real beauty to my life.

It's as difficult as you want it to be. Passion and dedication are always mandatory ingredients when learning a new instrument ;)
