Ney Positioning

(1/1)

NeyLove:
Hello guys,

I was wondering about Ney positioning and how to hold it.
I am a left hander, should I place the Ney to the right or left hand side,
does it matter? I want to avoid bad habits.

Thank you

Yildiz:
I believe the rear hole is typically off center, rotated slightly to the advantage of playing with left hand on top (better for right-handed people).  You can check this easily in a mirror by holding the ney so that the six holes point directly away from you / towards the mirror.  Look at the rear hole and see where it is in relation to the front six.  Both of my neys (sol & yildiz made by Niri) have the back hole slightly rotated to my left in relation to the front holes.  I think  this makes reach easier for left hand on top with instrument held to the right, as Niri plays in his videos.

Playing with right hand on top and / or with instrument angled to the left seems perfectly possible.  But if most neys are non-symmetrical, with holes drilled to the advantage of how Niri holds the ney, then you may find yourself at a disadvantage holding it differently, especially when using a longer ney.

I'm a beginner, so do seek a more informed opinion.
