Tips to continue oud studies
« on: January 06, 2015, 03:09:48 PM »
Hello folks. 2 years ago I had the great chance to stay in Egypt for 3 months and for 2, I was a student in Beit-El-Oud or, Cairo´s Oud House. I talked to his excellency Master Naseer Shaama and he introduced me to Mina, a great oud performer who was my teacher during that time. Back then he introduced me a Naseer Shaama´s song and some excercises and posture tips. I´ve been a guitar player for 20 years so I had to relearn the technique.

Since then I´ve practiced erratically,  Now I feel stuck. I can´t find a free reliable online source of info to continue my studies. I live in Costa Rica and it´s quite unfeasible to find an oud instructor around.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Ronald.

I think one of the best ways is to keep listening to middle eastern music. Also you can take Skype lessons, there are many teachers available around the world. I am also available for Skype lessons, you can email me at support@oudforguitarists.com. I wish you all the best. What style do you play/like? Arabic or Turkish, or both?

Hi Ronald :)
I agree with the post above ^. Just keep listening to this type of music. You already learned the basics, while you were in Egypt (that's really cool by the way! I've never been out of the USA).
So, just learn technique after technique, look for videos online, there are plenty of people explaining how to play the darbuka and oud and other arab instruments. I think that, if you really are passionate about it, you'll find a way to learn these things :)

Firstly I am amazed with the level of experience you are having…. 20 years? It’s unreal but anyway solution for you now is online learning only, as there are hardly any good offline instructors, so whether try Youtube or look for an online guide, it’s the best solution as far I can think.
