Hey joseph how are you?
So if your a begginer I would suggest to start with the plastic ones we have in arabinstruments, they are easier than reed ones. Soon we will be getting some reed neys from eygept so you can find an arabic reed ney here as well
to buy a good turkish ney you'll probably need to go to istanbul...

if after a while your still squeaking let me know well try and work out something for you
good luck!
btw, you are using the first tutorial arent you?!?!?

Dear Alia
if you read ilahi notation. you understand that the names of the notes are actually positions on the ney, so sol concert on the page will be palyied by rast position when all holes are closed. same goes for arabic and turkish neys. turkish basic tuning is funny that way, they read sol on the page, but play re concert... because they play mostly on the area of mi hicaz, mi ussak, re rast re nihavent and so on, it varies concidering who is playing or singing.  the big orchestras usually do so... bolahenk ney is the one going these scales.
and by the way, many of the pieces played by accomplished arabic players are by turkish well known composers like tanburi jamil bey, or refik fersan.
many of the arab written notation ive encountered is written in concert.
so i will probably need a"notes translator" to fit it to the ney i want to play, again, under the circumstances

hope that helped you.
i'de be happy to clear any puzzles

Ney, Kawala Lovers / Re: Playing precise pitched note
« on: June 04, 2015, 03:37:08 AM »
ok, that explains it
if one hole was out of tune than yes- the flute is bad, but if the whole ney is low or high that means your blowing is different from the maker's - which is very reasonable.  turkish ney makers often make their neys low because they blow very very strong.  the arab ney makers tend to blow much lighter so with normal blow the pitch can go high... that means you have a good blow :)
thanx vey much for the kind words btw!

ok anton, we come to the rescue
so, the notes on mansur should should like this:
6 holes closed (from the top, down) - sol/G - known as rast
5 holes closed - la/A - dugah
4 holes closed - si bemol/Bb - kurdi
3 holes closed - si coma/B (with a notch down) - segah
2 holes closed - do/C - chargah
1 hole closed - do#/C# - hicaz
0 holes closed - re/D - neva

if your mansur sounds on second position (5 holes closed) Bb than its not tuned.  especialy if all the rest are pitch tuned

hey guys
ueeii, there are 2 tutorial videos i posted here in arab instruments as to how to practice the ney in the beginning
hylian - i suggest to begin with D or E ney, and even plastic, if you cant afford the reed one
avel - i looked at the chard, its good, but missing the most important thing - the note names. the position when all holes are closed is called rast, and it is the tonic for rast maqam, and so on...

hey avel
rast, husieni, ussak, kurd, hicaz... the basic forms.
as for tunes to play - its best that you find tunes you like and try to read them in notes, i started with omer faruk tekbilek tunes, which are somewhat easy.
