Buy & Sell Oud / Re: Reliable sources to buy new & used ouds?

My advice is: never, ever, absolutely not in a million years, buy a used oud that you cannot check beforehand: you need to see it, play it, check in what state it is, how it sounds, how is the action, if it has any cracks, if it has any wear and tear signs brought on by the risha, especially around the scratchplate, and ultimately you need to feel an affinity for the instrument. You cannot do that with an instruments whose sole point of contact is a picture! So, better wait for a bit and have the oud turn up near your area (even a train trip is reasonable) and you can see everything, that buy one on the spur of the moment and being stuck with a plank of wood which will put you off learning the oud for good....

Buy & Sell Oud / Re: Looking for a Beginner Oud

depends what kind of music you want to play, really. Egyptian ouds (Arabic ouds in general) tend to be bigger and have a deeper, earthier sound. Turkish ouds are smaller, have a treblier sound and have a lower action (the action is the height of the strings from the fingerboard). Iraqi ouds are smaller, have a floating bridge (not stuck to the soundboard) and are really loud. There is a fundamental difference between the three, but for a beginner it is not really important, in my opinion. The important thing is that you get an oud that has a low action (not exceeding 2.5 mm in a Turkish, 3 mm in an Arabic or Iraqi oud. More that that and the oud will be unplayable), whose pegs wind strings up smoothly, and obviously has no cracks. Where are you based, by the way? If you're in the UK I might suggest you a few places....
