Buy & Sell Darbuka / Re: Buying a Doumbek making decision........
« on: October 19, 2015, 04:47:39 PM »
There are a million Doumbek to choose from out there, and a lot of junk, so be very selective. Prices are great right now, so you shouldn't have to pay a lot.  Also, if you're willing to buy something cosmetically flawed, you can find some great deals on instruments that may have a ding or two, but play beautifully. Welcome you to make a decision for buying Doumbek.

I guess there are advantages to not being formally trained. Nobody explained to me I can't do finger rolls on my djembe. So I do. Especially accompanying Irish pub music, I use non-traditional methods on my doumbek also to good effect in other music. When doumbeks and djembes are playing together the djembes tend to hold the main rhythm down while the doumbeks cut through with those gorgeous high notes. I've seen wonderful dialogues take place between the two.

Many ouds have 12 pegs so that you can use them with either 12-string high f'f' tuning or 11-string low C tuning. Just because you have 12 pegs, you don't have to use them all.

The expected tuning for your oud are:
C FF AA dd gg c'c'
C GG AA dd gg c'c'
D GG AA dd gg c'c'
FF AA dd gg c'c' f'f'
GG AA dd gg c'c' f'f'

Mavrothis has a good explanation and diagrams here:

I'm at the earliest stages of my next oud project. I have obtained some highly figured Black Cherry that I would like to use for the back. For all you oud builders out there, what is your opinion. I know that figured wood can be a bit unstable sometimes. But then again, violins are almost all figured maple. I would appreciate your opinions.

I was thinking that it may be not very ethical to post full books online and then I noticed that the publisher of Jamil Bashir oud method is the ministry of education. You can try to read them .

Actually i did not heard it yet! But, definitely my main Music man is George. I remember in 2001 when I was going through a Beatles obsession. It only made my love for that band stronger. That night when I heard about the passing of the "quiet Beatles", I made it my duty to go down to Strawberry Fields in Central Park and celebrate with a vigil. And there were a whole lot of people there too. This man was a very important one in the history of Rock & Roll.
