Oud Lovers / Tortoise shell ouds?
« on: April 14, 2015, 04:31:22 AM »
Are tortoise shell ouds illegal to commercialize in Europe? I don't want one for myself, I'm just curious because it seems like tortoise shams or pickguards are greatly appreciated by some players.

Is it possible to control the sympathetic resonance of an oud while playing? I'm not talking about muting the strings, but about the air resonance, is there a way to control this while playing the oud?

Has anyone ever had this problem? Can the soundboard of an oud simply sink inside the case?? A friend of mine has this problem, and he is desperate! Is it fixable?

How do you know which strings to get for your oud? How do you know which are of good quality and are resistant / durable enough?

Oud Lovers / Comparison between Arabic & Turkish oud?
« on: April 14, 2015, 04:20:08 AM »
Do you know what the main differences are between an Arabic and a Turkish oud? Besides the tuning, which I understand is done differently on these 2 type of ouds.

Oud Lovers / How come there are so few women oud players?
« on: April 14, 2015, 04:17:45 AM »
Everywhere I look, all I see is famous men oud players, too few women players out there. How come? Does anyone know of any women players that are famous?

Would an inner ceramic coating improve the sound of a darbuka? Or is that just a myth, and a simple painting job is enough to add a good resonance to the drum?

I have a friend (well, more of an acquaintance) who is absolutely sure that in order to rehead his ceramic doumbek, you'd have to glue the head.
I disagree, but he insists he read it in a book, so he's probably gonna go ahead and do that....
Is this really the way to rehead a doumbek? I thought you're supposed to use the rope system.

Introduce Yourself / New here!

Hey everyone! I'm new here and my name is Ayla. There, I have introduced myself :) Now it's your turn! :D (just kidding)

Oud Videos & Sound / Which oud sound do you like best?
« on: March 12, 2015, 04:41:28 AM »
I was browsing though this website and stumbled upon the oud sound videos. I haven't listened to all of them yet, I was looking for the sound of the electric oud (I'm really curious about that one!) and, so far, I like this one best:

But, again, I still have a few more oud videos to browse through :D

What's everyone's favorite, by the way?

Riq, Mazhar, bendir, Tar... Lover / How are frame drums really made?
« on: March 12, 2015, 04:30:28 AM »
I was always curious about this! How are frame drums really made? Are they made by hand? Like, can someone actually build one? Or do frame drum lovers have to buy them from manufacturers only?

Of all the frame drum types that exist, which are the ones that have cymbals on the sides?
I know the Riq and the Daf are equipped with cymbals (although not all Dafs, only some).
Do you know of any other drums that have them?

When I was a little girl, I had a toy frame drum (it was a tambourine). It was made out of plastic and didn't even sound very well :D But as i got older I found out about the many types of frame drums. So, which one do you prefer and why? What's the difference between the ones you prefer and the other types of frame drums?

So, just for my curiosity, I was wondering why are women the ones usually playing the frame drums?
I love them, by the way, so in almost all my searches, I see pictures and videos with mostly women playing them. It made me wonder, is there a reason why women play the frame drums or is this just a coincidence?
