Buy & Sell Oud / Re: Where did you buy your oud case from?
« on: April 13, 2015, 05:04:30 AM »
^ I have one of those, but I'm letting my oud "breathe" from time to time, I'm not keeping it inside the case if I don't play it for a few days. I paid good money for it and I really don't want anything to happen to my oud!

Well, what did your friend do? Can you refer him to this forum?
What exactly is he looking to do?

If it helps, show him this video:

Oud Teachers & Lessons / Re: Lesson 1: posture
« on: April 13, 2015, 05:01:14 AM »
Posture is very important. It may not seem like it, especially because not all oud players have the same posture while playing, but if you're not comfortable, you risk getting tired real easy!

Hey fitz! Welcome to the forums! :)
Have you tried searching for darbuka lessons on YouTube? There are many videos you can watch and learn the basic techniques!

I would like a professional opinion on this: are hard cases a better choice for an oud? I don't have a hard case, I have a soft case, but I was wondering if I should maybe get a hard oud case? What do you think?

Advice, Tips and Questions Regarding the Oud / Re: Peg slippage?

Does it slip because it can't hold your notes? It's a possibility, have you tried tuning it in a different way? It might work.

Advice, Tips and Questions Regarding the Oud / Re: Tuning pegs?
« on: March 30, 2015, 05:19:50 AM »
Ebony - yes, they are good quality pegs, great material, reliable and - most important- durable!
You can also use wooden pegs, depending on how they are made, some people prefer metal but I don't know if I'd recommend it.. you could try, I may be reluctant to using metal pegs because of how it may change the visual aspect of your oud.

I don't know if building an oud is the best thing to do, if you're not an expert, there are so many things to take into consideration, like the thickness of the wood, the type of strings to use and so much more.

I suggest you try out what Brick told you, but you could also try out the standard Iraqi tuning F CC DD GG CC FF, or even the C GG AA DD GG CC and experiment with it, see how you personally like it.

Oud Lovers / Re: Where does the oud originate from?
« on: March 30, 2015, 05:14:10 AM »
I think the history of the oud is very interesting. I don't know where it really originates from, but I do know it has been mentioned starting with the biblical times! So, it really does have a long, interesting history!

Oud Videos & Sound / Re: Oud With Distortion
« on: March 11, 2015, 12:12:32 PM »
The song per se isn't very catchy but I do love the sound of the instrument! I also love how the oud sounds at the 0.35 and 0.40,when he slides his fingers on the strings :D

By the way, this video reminds me I have to get a new pick!

Buy & Sell Oud / Reliable sources to buy new & used ouds?
« on: March 11, 2015, 12:05:27 PM »
Do you guys know of any reliable sources to buy new and old (used) ouds? Online stores or even shops in yor area, depending on where you live, some people might find the information handy :D
I got mine with the help of a friend who knew a guy and, all in all it was very complicated, I didn't really know where to look to find a good, reliable place that sells them :D

Oud Lovers / Why do you guys love the oud?
« on: March 11, 2015, 12:01:08 PM »
When I was younger, my parents paid for guitar lessons for me and I loved playing it! But since we never had the money to actually buy a good guitar, I stopped playing.
Then some time went by and - it was pretty much a few years ago when I discovered YouTube - I found some videos with some people playing the oud! I'm also into oriental music, so I thought... perfect! I was already grown up so I could afford to buy an oud :D

So, basically, this is why I'm into learning how to play this instrument and why I like it so much :)

What about you?
Is there a particular reason you guys like the oud?
