who is Hashim Alqallaf? I've searched several variations of the name in English and Arabic and haven't come up with anyone. Are there any other oud players who have a similar classical/finger-style/flamenco approach to the oud? Thanks for any help.

Oud Videos & Sound / Re: Which oud sound do you like best?
« on: October 31, 2015, 04:36:31 PM »
I love Arabic Oud Sound. The Arabic Oud is the most romantic sounding of all the Oud types. It has a deep, round, and well-balanced sound. The highest strings cut through and stick out through an ensemble, and the bass strings give a nice smooth rumble. It typically features shorter sustain. The Oud may be ornate or simple. There is a lot of variation in style and design in these Ouds, but the bowl shape is large and round creating a deep mellow tone. The pegs are the same as all Ouds, friction style similar to Violin pegs. Most models now hold five double course nylon strings with a single low bass string for a total of 11 strings. It is possible to find 10 string Ouds and 12, but 11 string is the norm.

Buy & Sell Darbuka / Looking for a pro quality doumbek....
« on: October 29, 2015, 04:13:07 PM »
I have been playing doumbek/darbuka for a few years now and have advanced enough in my playing that I want to upgrade the quality of my instruments.

I have 2 that I use right now an Alexandria copper doumbek (8 1/2 inch head) which while very pretty was bought second hand and is a little banged up. Still has a decent sound though. My other is a slightly smaller Meinl aluminum darbuka with built in jingles, this drum is light (was exceedingly inexpensive) and is great for travel. I have played on other drums (always told it was just from some guy who makes them in X place far far away from me) that were much easier to get a wide range of sounds out of and had superior tone.

The problem is I am pretty much stuck ordering online and hoping that what I get meets my expectations. Does anyone here have any suggestions for manufacturers/importers of high quality instruments?
