Oud Lovers / Re: Ziad Rajab CD info needed
« on: February 07, 2016, 12:11:47 PM »
After listening to the streaming versions of Rajab's music, I tried to order the CD, only to find that (as David noted a couple of years ago).
I sent him an email and he responded quickly by putting a copy of the CD in the mail from his home in Thessaloniki. It arrived this morning and I've been listening to it non-stop since then. It is an amazing set of songs showing the range, beauty, and power of Rajab's composition and performance.
I am waiting to hear from Rajab to find out how much he'd like me to transfer into his PayPal account. (He sent the CD without any payment from me.)
If you like what you hear at
then you should go to his contact page and send Rajab a request:

Riq, Mazhar, bendir, Tar... Lover / Re: Frame drum Question.

I have owned several frame drums in the past, and am going to buy a 16" tar soon actually. The ones I have used are tuned using a small tuning key. There are holes around the bottom of the shell that you tighten or loosen. Frame drums have a wide tuning range, there is no requirement. You'll be able to tell if the head is too tight fairly easily. I'd say there's a little over a half octave of good notes you can tune one of these to before it either is too loose or too tight.

I don't know though. You may try online instrument seller sites. One of them is They have plenty of collection of Tar.

Before buying some you have to decide what drums do you use. from my side i will tell you, for most live shows i play the 10" soloist weighted Remo.If it is more of a concert setting than a noisy bar environment i will use my ceramic darbuka and dohola made by Descarga Percussion.
My frame drums are a 20" Cooperman Tar and a 16" Tar from Emin. This small and humble collection of drums has seen concert halls, live radio performances, traveled around the world and featured on many a CD. You don't need 300 drums, you just need a few really nice ones. In the beginning of your rhythmic journey you just need a nice, inexpensive yet inspiring, well made one!

May be it will help you.

Ney Kawala Sound & Videos / Re: Answer me!
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:44:10 AM »
In fact, I think they are indeed two very similar instruments! The main difference is the sound. Although the kawala and the ney sound almost the same, if you listen closely, the kawala sounds a bit more "heavy" or "soulful", if you know what I mean, as opposed to a ney.
