Riq, Mazhar, bendir, Tar... Lover / How are frame drums really made?

I was always curious about this! How are frame drums really made? Are they made by hand? Like, can someone actually build one? Or do frame drum lovers have to buy them from manufacturers only?

Of all the frame drum types that exist, which are the ones that have cymbals on the sides?
I know the Riq and the Daf are equipped with cymbals (although not all Dafs, only some).
Do you know of any other drums that have them?

When I was a little girl, I had a toy frame drum (it was a tambourine). It was made out of plastic and didn't even sound very well :D But as i got older I found out about the many types of frame drums. So, which one do you prefer and why? What's the difference between the ones you prefer and the other types of frame drums?

So, just for my curiosity, I was wondering why are women the ones usually playing the frame drums?
I love them, by the way, so in almost all my searches, I see pictures and videos with mostly women playing them. It made me wonder, is there a reason why women play the frame drums or is this just a coincidence?
