Why are frame drums usually played by women?
« on: March 12, 2015, 04:14:19 AM »
So, just for my curiosity, I was wondering why are women the ones usually playing the frame drums?
I love them, by the way, so in almost all my searches, I see pictures and videos with mostly women playing them. It made me wonder, is there a reason why women play the frame drums or is this just a coincidence?

:) :P :D

I'm not a native, so I really don't know why, but if I had to guess, I think it's because it's so easy to handle a frame drum. Ok, there are techniques used to 'play' them, but my guess is (and please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong) it's because it's easier.
I have seen many women play the oud as well though, and they're really good at it!

To be fair itís not exactly the case as I have seen many males doing that, so itís just about what one is more attached to, as it is mention by Molly that they are able to handle it much better, so thatís why you mostly see them playing the frame drums.

I really have not obverse anything like that, I feel itís just whatever we like, if we like drums more than they play that, I have not seen itís given by force to anyone as itís just not possible for it to work well in such situation.

I haven't really noticed this about frame drums, but maybe it's like women and flutes in the US? It seems like more women are drawn to the flute even though it's a beautiful instrument and anyone could play it. People just for some reason think of it as girly. The same goes for harps. Maybe it is also true for frame drums?
